The proposed redesign at Kennesaw Mountain will enhance visitor experience and safety. Approximately 40 feet southeast of the Visitor's Center, a new shuttle stop will be constructed within a previously landscaped area. This stop will feature an Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) accessible concrete walkway connecting to existing paths, with "Zigzag" fencing adjusted for improved wayfinding.
The shuttle loading area will be formalized with a 6-inch curb and a concrete plaza, providing a safer waiting space that extends to include the existing shade structure. Site furnishings and plantings may be added for visitor comfort.
To restrict personal vehicle access to the mountain top, a manual gate will be installed across one lane, with laydown bollards in the other for Park staff access. Construction of the ABA accessible walkway may require the removal of one 15-20 inch DBH oak tree.
The 1.2-mile road leading to the summit will be closed to single passenger vehicles, becoming accessible only to the shuttle bus, pedestrians, and cyclists (subject to hours). The redesigned road will feature a 10-foot shared bus/bike lane for two-way traffic on the inside curve and a 10-foot pedestrian lane on the outside curve. New pavement markers and appropriate roadway symbology will delineate these lanes, along with additional safety markers and signage at trail crossings. No new construction is anticipated along the road itself.
